A "Chinese", "US" or "European" iPhone is the same model with a different region code, and in Mexico all three can work if they have the right bands and are not locked to a carrier. The biggest practical difference is that iPhone 14 and later models sold in the United States have no SIM tray and only work with an eSIM, which Telcel, AT&T, Movistar and Bait do activate. An Android with a Chinese ROM is a different case, because it arrives without Google services.
Go to Settings > General > About > Model Number. The two letters before "/A" indicate the sales region. LL is the United States and Canada. LZ is Chile and Paraguay. CH is China. ZD is Germany, Benelux, Austria, France, Switzerland and Monaco. The same code appears on the SIM tray and on the box label, and all three must match. We found no code of Mexico's own in the tables we consulted; the country does not appear separately from the rest of Latin America.
Knowing the region does not tell you whether the device is genuine. That is covered in how to tell if an iPhone is original or fake.
iPhone 14 and later models sold in the United States have no physical SIM tray. That applies to the 15, 16, 16e, 17 and 18 from that market. A refurbished US iPhone without a tray is not defective and is not a clone; it needs a Mexican carrier to activate an eSIM for it. Secondary sources indicate that the iPhone 17 is sold eSIM-only in Mexico too, along with Canada, Japan and several Gulf countries, but we did not confirm this on an Apple page.
The four big carriers activate eSIMs, always on the carrier's side, not from your home without help.
A listing that says "solo AT&T" (AT&T only) or "bloqueado" (locked) describes a device that accepts one carrier's SIM only. In Mexico, unlocking is treated as a user's right. AT&T México unlocks for free when the device is fully paid off with no balance owed, through a request to customer service using the IMEI (dial *#06#), and usually resolves it in under 24 hours. A device reported stolen or lost cannot be legally unlocked. If a US iPhone still owes a balance to its original carrier in the United States, neither you nor the seller can force the unlock. To find out, insert an active SIM from another carrier and confirm that it registers on the network and can make a call.
A phone from the Chinese market arrives without Google Mobile Services. It has no Play Store, Gmail, Maps or Google framework. You can install the Play Store from an APK, but banking apps, Google Pay, Android Auto and "Hey Google" usually fail Google's integrity checks. Assume you will not receive security updates through Google Play Protect and that APK sources are a risk in themselves. We found no guidance from PROFECO (the consumer protection agency) or any other Mexican authority on these devices.
Samsung splits the processor in its Galaxy S phones by region. In recent generations, Snapdragon goes to the United States, Canada, China, Korea and Australia (and Japan in the S26 series), and Exynos to the rest of the world, historically including Latin America. The model number suffix helps as a general pattern, not a fixed rule. -U is usually the Snapdragon carrier variant in the United States, -B or -F the global Exynos variant. Which chip reaches Mexico for each model is not confirmed in the sources we read. Look up the exact model number from the listing on GSMArena instead of assuming.
The band that decides everything is band 4 (AWS 1700/2100 MHz), the minimum for Telcel, AT&T and Movistar. A device compatible with AT&T México is also compatible with Movistar, because they share spectrum. Telcel added band 7 (2600 MHz). Band 28 (700 MHz) determines your signal on Bait, the Altán network, and improves indoor, highway and rural coverage on any carrier. Before buying a device from the United States or China, look up its band list and confirm band 4 as a minimum, and band 28 if you live outside a big city or want to use Bait.
The CRT (Comisión Reguladora de Telecomunicaciones, the telecoms regulator), which replaced the IFT, requires type approval (homologación) per model for any device that transmits. Models sold in Mexico already have it. An imported model that was never sold here may not. This is a different risk from the bands, because a phone can have the right bands and still not be approved.
With the device in your hand, follow what to check when it arrives.
The cost and plan restriction of AT&T's eSIM, the eSIM-only sale of the iPhone 17 in Mexico and the Samsung chip that reaches Mexico come from secondary sources and are not confirmed with the companies.
