PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo can block an entire console, and that block passes to the next owner. Xbox says its ban stays after the console is sold and reset, Sony says a suspension on a second-hand console cannot be lifted, and Nintendo describes its block as permanent. None of the three publishes a serial number lookup to check before you buy. The only test is to connect the console to the internet and sign in, so buy where you can return it and run that test the day it arrives. Menu names below are the ones Sony Mexico uses for a console set to Spanish, with a literal translation in brackets.
The first-day list
- Buy where you can return it. Online or by phone the law gives you five business days; over the counter it depends on the shop.
- Connect it to the internet and sign in with your own account the day it arrives.
- On a Switch, look for the notice that online services are restricted by Nintendo or the codes 2124-4007, 2124-4508 or 2124-4517.
- On a PS5, ask the seller to deactivate it under Uso compartido de consola y juego offline [Console Sharing and Offline Play] before handing it over.
- On a Switch, ask for it to arrive restored or initialised, with none of the seller's Nintendo accounts.
- Ask for the original proof of purchase if you want to try the manufacturer's warranty.
- Check that the region of your account and the console lets you buy games.
- Test every stick and trigger on the controllers.
- Get the shop's warranty in writing and keep the box, invoice and photos until the five business days are over.
Console bans and suspensions
PlayStation can suspend a console. With that suspension you cannot use it to access any account, play online or reach content bought on PlayStation Store. Sony answers on its page that a suspension on a second-hand console cannot be lifted, and that if you bought one you should contact the seller.
Xbox can ban a console permanently. The ban belongs to the device, not the account. Microsoft says that selling or giving the console away does not change the ban, that a factory reset does not remove it and that Xbox Safety cannot overturn these measures. Among the reasons it lists are physically tampering with the console to run unauthorised software, online fraud and repeated, serious breaches of the Services Agreement. If you bought a banned console, Microsoft sends you back to the previous owner or the reseller.
Nintendo blocks consoles for breaches of its user agreements, such as fraudulent or unauthorised transactions or violations of its community guidelines. The console shows a message that online services on it are currently restricted by Nintendo. Codes 2124-4007 and 2124-4508 mean a permanent block, and 2124-4517 is also a block. Nintendo's pages say nothing about second-hand consoles or appeals, so we did not confirm whether the block survives a change of account.
The previous owner's accounts
Sony says that to activate a new PS5 the owner has to manually deactivate the old one, under Configuración > Usuarios y cuentas > Otros > Uso compartido de consola y juego offline > Desactivar [Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play > Deactivate], and that all devices on an account can also be deactivated remotely when the owner no longer has access to the console. Deactivating does not delete data or harm the console. Sony describes this as something the account owner does; asking the seller to do it before handover is our recommendation.
On a Switch, the way to unlink every Nintendo account is to restore a Switch 2 to factory settings or initialise a Switch. A Nintendo account can be linked to several consoles at once, and deleting a user from the console also deletes that user's save data on it. If the console arrives with the seller's users on it, ask for it to be restored before you accept it.
Region
Region means different things on each platform. On Nintendo, Switch game cards are not region locked, except consoles and cards distributed in China, and the eShop depends on your account's country; if you change country, your balance does not move with you. Nintendo notes that it has not tested all foreign software on consoles from every region and recommends buying software from the console's region.
On PlayStation, an account's country cannot be changed once the account is created. We found no Sony page confirming whether PS5 discs are region locked.
On Xbox, the console's location is changed in Settings, but if your billing address does not match that regional setting, you will not be able to buy content.
Controllers and stick drift
Nintendo says that if a Joy-Con's sticks are still stuck or hard to move after cleaning and calibrating, the Joy-Con has to go in for service. We found no current official page about free Joy-Con repair in Mexico.
For the DualSense, PlayStation says to reset the controller first by holding the reset button for at least 5 seconds, then choose the button or analogue stick problem in its guide.
Microsoft says its recalibration tool for Xbox controllers does not fix every stick and trigger problem, including drift from normal wear. If a stick moves on its own when you test it, recalibrating does not guarantee a fix, and that is a defect worth claiming within your deadline.
Manufacturer warranty
Nintendo's warranty in Mexico, issued by Latamel, covers consoles, accessories and physical games for 1 year from delivery to the consumer. It asks for the warranty document stamped by the shop or a proof of purchase, it is void if someone unauthorised altered or repaired the product, and repairs must not take more than 30 days from arrival at the service centre. With a used console it only helps if you have the first buyer's original proof of purchase, and we found no text about transferring the warranty.
The PS5 warranty covers "the final purchaser" for 1 year from the date of the sale document. The accessories warranty, for items like the DualSense, gives 1 year from delivery to the final consumer, asks for the stamped document or the invoice and sets 30 days as the maximum for replacement or repair. It applies to products sold by authorised entities in Mexico and 14 other countries. It is not clear whether it covers someone who buys used.
Microsoft says Xbox warranty terms depend on where the device was bought, and that if it is registered, the Microsoft account shows its warranty status under Devices. Under warranty, repairs are free. Only whoever registered the console can see that status, and we did not read the limited warranty document, so we do not have the term for Mexico.
Disc or digital
Sony announced on 1 July 2026 that it will stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028. Games already released, or released on disc before that date, are unaffected. Keep that in mind if you are comparing a PS5 with a disc drive against a digital-only one on the consoles page.
The shop and your rights in Mexico
We did not read a warranty policy specific to refurbished consoles at the shops we compare, so ask each one for theirs in writing. The shop must tell you precisely and clearly that the console is used or rebuilt, and record it on the item, the packaging, the delivery note or the invoice (article 39 of the LFPC, Mexico's Federal Consumer Protection Law). If it offers a warranty, it cannot be shorter than 90 days from delivery, under article 77 as amended in the DOF in January 2018, and PROFECO adds that the warranty document must be in writing.
If you bought online or by phone, you have five business days from delivery to cancel the purchase without liability (article 56), with return shipping and insurance on you. It does not apply to over-the-counter purchases. If the console does not match what you were offered, or if a repair under warranty does not leave it fit for use, you choose a replacement or a refund of what you paid, and you also get a bonificación, a compensation payment of at least 20% of the price (articles 92 and 92 TER). After a failed repair, a replacement must be a new product.
Look the shop up in PROFECO's Buró Comercial, which shows only closed complaints and currently covers January 2019 to August 2026. The details are in your rights when buying refurbished and the photo routine for opening the parcel is in what to check on arrival.

No platform publishes a ban lookup by serial number; the test is to connect. The LFPC text hosted by PROFECO dates from 2012 and we cite it only for article 92 TER.
