What to check when buying a refurbished Apple Watch

This guide covers the Apple Watch. We did not research Galaxy Watch, Wear OS watches or Garmin, so the steps below do not apply to those brands. Before you pay for a refurbished Apple Watch, confirm that your iPhone can pair with it, that the watch is no longer tied to someone else's Apple account and, if it is a cellular model, that its model number matches Mexico. When it arrives, check the battery and test it before the five business days the law gives you to cancel a distance purchase run out. Menu names below are the ones Apple Mexico uses for a device set to Spanish, with a literal translation in brackets.

The list before and after you pay

Find the watch model in Apple's compatibility table and confirm your iPhone and iOS version qualify.
Check which watchOS version that model reaches.
Ask the seller to erase the watch and remove it from their Apple account. If you can, try pairing it with your iPhone before paying.
If it is a cellular model, ask that the previous owner removed and cancelled their data plan.
If it is a cellular model, compare the A#### number printed on the back of the watch with Apple's table for Mexico.
Look up the serial number in Apple's Check Coverage tool.
When it arrives, read the battery's maximum capacity on the watch itself.
Clean the watch and band only with what Apple allows for each material.
Get the warranty in writing and keep the box, packaging, invoice and photos until the five business days are over.

Your iPhone has to pair with it

An Apple Watch only works paired with an iPhone running a certain iOS version, and that requirement depends on your phone, not the watch. In Apple's table, Series 12 and Ultra 4 need an iPhone 11 or later with iOS 27. Series 9 and 10 need an iPhone XS or later. Ultra, Series 8 and SE 2 need an iPhone 8 or later. Series 6 and 7 accept an iPhone 6s or later, but Apple notes that updating a watch to watchOS 11 requires an iPhone XS or later with iOS 18.

Older models have a ceiling. Series 3 goes up to watchOS 8.8.1 and Series 1 and 2 up to watchOS 6.3.

How far it updates

According to Apple's list of security releases, watchOS 27 came out on 14 September 2026 for Series 9 and later. watchOS 26.6 reached Series 6 and later on 27 July 2026. Series 4 and 5 and the first-generation SE received watchOS 10.6.2 on 2 February 2026, a release Apple published with no CVE entries. Apple does not announce end-of-support dates, so we cannot tell you whether those models will get another update. If you are comparing a Series 5 with a Series 9, weigh that software gap along with the price.

Activation Lock

Activation Lock turns on by itself when the owner sets up Find My on the paired iPhone. From then on, the watch asks for the Apple account email or phone number and password before anyone can unpair it from their iPhone, pair it with a new iPhone or turn off Find My.

Apple asks anyone buying outside Apple and its authorised resellers to make sure the watch has been erased and is no longer linked to the previous owner's account. The practical test is to pair it with your iPhone. If setup asks for the previous owner's Apple account password, the lock is still on and only that person can remove it. The check Apple describes in the Apple Watch app (Mi reloj > Todos los relojes > info button [My Watch > All Watches]) is done from the owner's iPhone, not yours.

If the owner has already handed the watch over, Apple says they can erase it and remove the lock at iCloud.com, under Buscar mi iPhone > Todos los dispositivos > Borrar Apple Watch [Find My iPhone > All Devices > Erase Apple Watch], then the X button. Ask the shop to do this before shipping it.

Cellular models

Apple lists AT&T and Telcel as the Apple Watch cellular carriers in Mexico. Its cellular models are "optimised to be used in the country of purchase", and Apple warns that not every model works in every country or region. Its carrier page splits model numbers by region. Based on our reading of the page order, in the Mexico table the Series 8 is A2772 (41 mm) or A2774 (45 mm), the SE 2 is A2726 (40 mm) or A2727 (44 mm) and the Ultra is A2622. The other table, for Germany and other countries, lists the Series 8 as A2773 or A2775, the SE 2 as A2725 or A2724 and the Ultra as A2684. From Series 9 on, the numbers match in the tables we checked. Find the A#### printed on the back of the watch and compare it with Apple's page before paying. Apple also says the service may not work with prepaid accounts or some older accounts.

Telcel charges MXN 99 a month per watch including VAT (85.35 before VAT) for Apple Watch service. It allows up to two watches per line, requires an active monthly plan and does not offer it on mixed or controlled-usage plans. The charge does not include voice, SMS or data. That was the price on its page on 29 September 2026 and it can change. We could not read AT&T's terms because its site blocked our requests.

The battery

On the watch, go to Configuración > Batería > Condición [Settings > Battery > Condition] and scroll down to maximum capacity. Apple says the battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity after 1,000 full charge cycles. Apple does not set a minimum percentage for buying a used watch. The floor of more than 80% that Mercado Libre sets for listing refurbished items with a battery is that shop's rule, not Apple's.

Apple says Series 7 and SE 2 recalibrate the reading after updating to watchOS 26 or later, and that Series 4 and 5 did so earlier with watchOS 9.0 and the 44 mm Series 6 with watchOS 9.4. A reading taken before that update may not be accurate, so check it again after updating. If the capacity does not match what the shop advertised, claim it under the shop's warranty.

Cleaning and bands

Apple allows cleaning the outside of the watch and metal, Solo Loop, Ocean or Nike Sport bands with a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe, a 75% ethyl alcohol wipe or Clorox disinfecting wipes. Do not use those products on fabric or leather bands, and do not use anything with bleach or hydrogen peroxide. Clean the back crystal too, because built-up lotion or sunscreen can affect the sensor. Apple says nothing about wearing a band someone else used. If yours is fabric or leather, you cannot disinfect it with those products, so decide whether to keep it.

Apple's coverage and the shop's warranty

In Apple's Check Coverage tool you enter the serial number and see the device's coverage. We did not confirm that the tool recognises every Apple Watch model.

Each shop's warranty is different. iReNew, which sells used Apple Watches in Mexico, gives 90 calendar days from purchase, for factory defects only and as an exchange only, and its policy says it does not refund any device. Compare prices on the watches page and read each shop's warranty policy before paying.

Your rights in Mexico

The shop must tell you precisely and clearly that the watch is used or rebuilt, and record it on the item, the packaging, the delivery note or the invoice (article 39 of the LFPC, Mexico's Federal Consumer Protection Law). If it offers a warranty, it cannot be shorter than 90 days from delivery; that is article 77 as amended by the reform published in the DOF in January 2018. PROFECO adds that the warranty document must be given in writing when you receive the product.

If you bought online or by phone, you have five business days from delivery to cancel the purchase without liability (article 56). Return shipping and insurance are on you. That right comes from sales made outside the shop's premises, so it does not apply to an over-the-counter purchase.

If the watch does not match what you were offered, or if a repair under warranty does not leave it fit for use, article 92 lets you choose between a replacement or a refund of what you paid, and also gives you a bonificación, a compensation payment of at least 20% of the price (article 92 TER). If you choose a replacement after a failed repair, the unit you get must be new.

Before buying, look the shop up in PROFECO's Buró Comercial. It shows only closed complaints, not those still in process, and currently covers January 2019 to August 2026.
