When a refurbished iPad arrives, turn it on and set it up from scratch the same day. If it asks for someone else's Apple Account, do not accept it. Before paying, check which version of iPadOS that generation gets, what kind of SIM it uses if you want cellular data, and which Apple Pencil works with it. Ask for the battery percentage the shop promises in writing, because we did not find an Apple page that documents a battery health screen on iPad. Prices by shop are on the tablets page, which is in Spanish.

The checklist

  1. Before paying, identify the exact iPad generation and look it up in the iPadOS compatibility list.
  2. If you want cellular data, confirm it is a Wi-Fi + Cellular model and what kind of SIM it uses.
  3. If you plan to use an Apple Pencil, check which one is compatible with that generation.
  4. Ask for the serial number and enter it in Apple's Check Coverage tool.
  5. Read the shop's warranty policy and ask for the battery percentage in writing.
  6. On arrival, photograph the package and the device.
  7. Turn it on. If the passcode screen or the Home Screen appears, the content was not erased and the seller has to erase it.
  8. Set it up. If it asks for the previous owner's Apple Account, it is still linked to that account.
  9. Open Settings and confirm there is no supervision notice.
  10. Activate your data plan if the iPad is Wi-Fi + Cellular.
  11. Keep the box, accessories, invoice and policy.

Activation Lock

Apple says it without qualification. Do not accept any used iPhone or iPad that is protected by Activation Lock. On an iPad with iPadOS 15 or later, a locked device shows a screen at startup saying only the owner can unlock it. Apple's text uses the word iPhone even when the device is an iPad.

The test is done with the device in your hands, because Apple does not offer a lookup by serial number or IMEI. Turn the iPad on and follow setup. If you are asked for the previous owner's Apple Account information, the device is still linked to their account. If that person is not present, Apple says to ask them to remove the device from their account using a browser. When you buy from a shop, that job belongs to the shop.

iPad supervised by an organization

Open Settings and look between the search field and the Apple Account area. If the iPad is supervised, a notice there says so, names the organization, and warns that it can monitor your internet traffic and locate the device.

Only the organization can release a device it bought for its staff. We did not read an Apple page that describes whether a remote management screen appears during iPad setup, so we do not describe that screen.

Which iPadOS version it gets

iPadOS 27 was released on September 14, 2026. According to Apple, it runs on these models.

  • iPad, 9th generation or later
  • iPad mini, 6th generation or later
  • iPad Air, 4th generation or later
  • iPad Pro 11-inch, 2nd generation or later
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch, 4th generation or later

One generation further back, devices received iPadOS 26.7 on the same day. These are the iPad 8th generation, iPad mini 5th, iPad Air 3rd, iPad Pro 11-inch 1st and iPad Pro 12.9-inch 3rd. The iPad 7th generation received iPadOS 18.7.10 on August 17, 2026.

Apple does not publish end-of-support dates. These are observations of which version received patches, not a promise of how long they will keep coming.

The battery

Apple Mexico says the iPad battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity after 1,000 complete charge cycles. Apple's one-year warranty covers the battery for factory defects. Out of warranty, service may be available through an Apple authorized service provider, with prices and terms that can vary.

We did not find an Apple page that describes a battery health screen on iPad like the one on iPhone, and we do not claim one exists. Your reference is what the shop promises in writing. iReNew, for example, grades its devices as Excelente, Muy bueno, Bueno and Aceptable, with a battery above 85% for Excelente and above 80% for the other grades.

SIM or eSIM on cellular models

An iPad that is Wi-Fi only has no cellular modem. We did not confirm in an Apple source how to tell one model from the other at a glance, so ask the seller to state it on the invoice.

Among Wi-Fi + Cellular models, Apple separates three groups.

  • eSIM only. iPad Pro 13-inch and 11-inch (M4, M5), iPad Air 13-inch and 11-inch (M2, M3, M4), iPad (A16) and iPad mini (A17 Pro).
  • eSIM and nano-SIM. iPad Pro 12.9-inch 3rd to 6th generation, iPad Pro 11-inch 1st to 4th generation, iPad Air 3rd to 5th generation, iPad 7th generation or later, and iPad mini 5th and 6th generation.
  • Nano-SIM only. Earlier models.

Apple's page places the iPad Pro 11-inch 2nd generation in two of those lists. If you buy that model, confirm with the seller which SIM it accepts.

Apple lists AT&T and Telcel as iPad carriers in Mexico, both with eSIM, LTE and 5G. For 5G service it requires an iPad Pro 12.9-inch 5th or 6th generation, an iPad Pro 11-inch 3rd or 4th, an iPad Air 5th, an iPad 10th or an iPad mini 6th, in the Wi-Fi + Cellular version and with a data plan. That page is from 2024 and may be out of date. We did not read plan prices.

Apple describes several ways to activate a plan with eSIM. They are eSIM Carrier Activation, transferring the plan from another iPad, joining an existing iPhone cellular plan, finding a new plan, using a QR code or using the carrier's app. We did not confirm which methods each carrier in Mexico accepts.

Apple Pencil

Each Apple Pencil works with a different list of iPad models.

  • Apple Pencil Pro. iPad Pro 13-inch and 11-inch (M4 and M5), iPad Air 13-inch and 11-inch (M2 to M4) and iPad mini (A17 Pro). It requires iPadOS 17.5 or later.
  • Apple Pencil (USB-C). It has its own list on Apple's page and requires iPadOS 17.1.1 or later.
  • Apple Pencil 2nd generation. iPad mini 6th generation, iPad Air 4th or 5th, iPad Pro 12.9-inch 3rd to 6th and iPad Pro 11-inch 1st to 4th.
  • Apple Pencil 1st generation. iPad 6th to 9th generation, iPad mini 5th, iPad Air 3rd, iPad Pro 12.9-inch 1st and 2nd, iPad Pro 10.5-inch and 9.7-inch. It also works with the iPad 10th generation and the iPad (A16), which need the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter to pair and charge it.

Locked parts and Apple coverage

Apple warns that a used part, such as a battery, a built-in display, a front camera or a Touch ID sensor, may be linked to another person's Apple Account. Before it can be used in another device it has to be unlocked with Repair Assistant or by removing Activation Lock. While it stays locked it has no warranty or AppleCare coverage. Apple does not say on that page whether this applies to every iPad.

Apple's Check Coverage tool accepts a serial number and shows the coverage Apple has on record for that device.

If something goes wrong

If the shop offers a warranty, it cannot be shorter than 90 days from delivery, under article 77 of the Federal Consumer Protection Law (LFPC) as reformed in 2018. Article 39 requires sellers to warn that a product is used or rebuilt and to record it on the item, the packaging, the delivery note or the invoice.

If you bought online or by phone, article 56 gives you five business days from delivery to revoke the purchase without liability, with return freight and insurance at your cost. It does not apply to purchases made over the counter.

If the iPad does not match what was offered, or it was repaired under warranty and still does not work properly, article 92 lets you choose between replacement and a refund. You are also entitled to a bonificación, a compensation payment of at least 20% of the price paid under article 92 TER. If you choose replacement after a failed repair, the product must be new.

Read the shop's policy with this in mind. iReNew gives 90 calendar days of warranty from purchase, for original defects only and by exchange only, and states that it does not give refunds. To claim, it asks for the invoice, the box in good condition and the original accessories. Its policy does not mention the five business days the law gives you to cancel an online purchase.

PROFECO's Buró Comercial shows each supplier's concluded complaints and not those still in process. The full route is in your rights when buying refurbished, the screen, camera and sound tests are in what to check on arrival, and the signs of a fake device are in original or fake.
