What to check on a refurbished MacBook or Mac

When you buy a refurbished Mac, check four things before your return window closes. The Mac must not be tied to someone else's Apple Account, must not have a firmware password, must not still be managed by a company, and its battery must be in the condition you were promised. Before paying, also check whether the model still gets the current version of macOS, because almost every Intel Mac has now been left behind. Prices by shop are on the Apple laptops page, which is in Spanish.

The checklist

Before paying, find out whether the Mac has Apple silicon or an Intel processor and look up the model in the macOS compatibility list.
Ask for the serial number and enter it in Apple's Check Coverage tool.
Ask the seller to confirm they removed their Apple Account and any firmware password.
Read the shop's full warranty policy.
On arrival, photograph the package and the machine.
Confirm that setup does not ask for someone else's Apple Account.
Open System Settings > General > Device Management and confirm no organization appears. On a Mac set to Mexican Spanish the path is Configuración del Sistema > General > Administración.
Check the battery cycle count in System Information.
Check the battery condition in System Settings > Battery.
On a Mac with Apple silicon and macOS Tahoe 26 or later, use Repair Assistant.
Keep the box, packaging, invoice and policy.

Apple has no refurbished store in Mexico

The address apple.com/mx/shop/refurbished answers that the page does not exist, and neither the menu nor the shopping help on the Mexican site mentions refurbished products. In Spain the same store exists and offers a one-year warranty. This is an absence we observed on September 29, 2026, not a statement from Apple.

In practice, every refurbished Mac you buy in Mexico comes from an independent seller. When a shop says "certified", it means its own inspection and not a certification from Apple. Clevercel lists MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac and Mac mini in its menu, and Rematech filters by Apple M1, M2 and M3. Clevercel's terms say its warranty is twelve months. Rematech's page shows three different terms, 6 months in the header, 4 months for online purchases and 90 calendar days for free repair, so read the policy and not the banner.

Activation Lock

With Activation Lock, the Mac asks for the device passcode or the Apple Account password before anyone can turn off Find My, erase the Mac or reactivate it. Apple warns that the lock stays on even if the contents are erased remotely. It applies to Macs with Apple silicon or the T2 security chip, running macOS Catalina 10.15 or later.

If the Mac asks for an account that is not yours when you erase it or set it up, it is still tied to the previous owner. Apple only offers to start a support request to turn off the lock for someone who has proof of purchase. We did not find an Apple page about buying a used Mac, like the one it has for iPhone.

Parts locked to another account

Apple warns that when a part from one product is used to repair another, that part may be locked to another person's Apple Account. If your Mac has Apple silicon and macOS Tahoe 26 or later, and it was repaired or you are not sure, Apple says to use Repair Assistant to check for an unfinished repair. Until it is unlocked, the part has no coverage under Apple's limited warranty or AppleCare. Apple's page on this names batteries, built-in displays, front cameras and Touch ID sensors. We did not confirm that it applies to every Mac.

Firmware password on Intel Macs

On an Intel Mac with a firmware password, anyone who does not know it cannot start up from macOS Recovery or from another disk. If the seller does not remember it, Apple requires an in-person appointment at an Apple Store or an authorized service provider, with the Mac and the original receipt or invoice as proof of purchase. A second-hand buyer who lacks that document can be left with no way forward. Ask the seller to remove it before shipping. Macs with Apple silicon do not have this password, and Apple points to FileVault as the equivalent.

Macs managed by a company

With the Mac already set up, go to System Settings > General > Device Management. If the top of the window says the Mac is supervised and managed by a named organization, it is still enrolled with them.

Only that organization can release it. Apple describes an administrator removing devices from Apple Business when they have been sold, lost or cannot be repaired, and says that after release Activation Lock can no longer be managed from there. We did not find an Apple page that describes what a buyer sees when first setting up a Mac that is still enrolled, so we do not describe that screen.

The battery

To see the cycle count, hold the Option key, click the Apple menu and choose System Information. In the Hardware section select Power. The cycle count appears under Battery Information.

In Apple's table, MacBook Pro models from mid 2009 onward and MacBook Air models from late 2010 onward have a maximum of 1000 cycles. Older models have maximums of 500 or 300. Apple says the battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity when it reaches that maximum. Apple does not define an acceptable cycle count for buying; what it publishes is the design maximum.

The condition appears in System Settings > Battery and has two messages. "Normal" means the battery is working normally. "Service Recommended" means it holds less charge than when it was new or is not working normally. Apple warns that third-party apps that report battery condition may not be accurate.

Apple Mexico offers a battery replacement service for all MacBook, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models with built-in batteries. It does not publish the price on the pages we read.

Which macOS version it gets

macOS 27 was released on September 14, 2026 and runs only on Macs with Apple silicon. According to Apple's list, that covers MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with Apple silicon from 2020 onward, iMac from 2021 onward, Mac mini from 2020 onward, Mac Studio from 2022 onward, the 2023 Mac Pro and the MacBook Neo.

macOS Tahoe 26 is the last version with full support for Intel, and it supports four Intel models.

No Intel MacBook Air or Intel Mac mini appears on that list. Apple says it will keep providing security updates for Intel Macs for three years. It does not say from what date the three years are counted or which macOS version receives them, and the sentence comes from a document for IT administrators.

Apple does not publish end-of-support dates either. What can be observed in its list of security releases is that Tahoe 26.7 and Sequoia 15.8 came out on September 14, 2026, and that the latest Sonoma release is 14.8.9, from August 6, 2026.

Apple coverage by serial number

Apple's Check Coverage tool accepts a serial number and shows the device's coverage. Apple's one-year warranty belongs to the original purchase, so a used Mac only keeps it if it is still in force. The result tells you what Apple has on record for that serial number. It does not tell you whether the Mac was repaired with non-original parts.

If something goes wrong

If the shop offers a warranty, it cannot be shorter than 90 days from delivery, under article 77 of the Federal Consumer Protection Law (LFPC) as reformed in 2018. Article 39 requires sellers to warn that a product is used or rebuilt and to record it on the item, the packaging, the delivery note or the invoice.

If you bought online or by phone, article 56 gives you five business days from delivery to revoke the purchase without liability, with return freight and insurance at your cost. It does not apply to purchases made over the counter.

If the Mac does not match what was offered, or it was repaired under warranty and still does not work properly, article 92 lets you choose between replacement and a refund. You are also entitled to a bonificación, a compensation payment of at least 20% of the price paid under article 92 TER. If you choose replacement after a failed repair, the product must be new.
