This guide mostly covers AirPods, with Sony and Samsung reset steps at the end. We did not research JBL, Bose or Sennheiser. Refurbished earbuds carry two risks you cannot see in the listing: that they are a copy with a valid serial number, and that they are still tied to the previous owner's Apple account. Check both before you pay or while you can still return them, and use the five business days the law gives you on distance purchases to test them properly. Menu names below are the ones Apple Mexico uses for a device set to Spanish, with a literal translation in brackets.

The AirPods list

  1. Ask for the serial number and model number before paying.
  2. When they arrive, compare the serial printed under the case lid with the one your iPhone shows in Configuración > Bluetooth [Settings > Bluetooth] > the info button next to the AirPods.
  3. Compare the model number, which starts with A and is on the underside of each AirPod, with Apple's list by generation.
  4. Look up the serial in Apple's Check Coverage tool, knowing that a valid result does not prove they are genuine.
  5. Pair them with your iPhone. If Find My says they are paired to another account, the seller has to remove them from theirs.
  6. Reset them using the method for your model.
  7. Use them for several days for calls and music, and watch for dropouts or noise cancellation failing on models that have it.
  8. Clean tips and meshes the way Apple describes.
  9. Get the warranty in writing and keep the box, case, invoice and photos until the five business days are over.

Serial and model number

AirPods and AirPods Pro share their serial number with the charging case, printed on the underside of the lid. Your iPhone shows it under Configuración > Bluetooth, via the info button next to the AirPods. From AirPods 2 on, and on AirPods Pro 1 and 2, each AirPod also has its own engraved serial, but Apple uses the one on the case lid for service. On AirPods Max, the serial is under the left magnetic ear cushion and on the original packaging. A case serial that matches the one in Settings is a reasonable check, though Apple does not present it as proof of authenticity.

The model number starts with A and is on the underside of each AirPod. Apple publishes the list by generation, from AirPods 1 to AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 1 to 3 and AirPods Max. For example, AirPods 4 with noise cancellation are A3056, A3055 or A3057, and AirPods Pro 2 with the MagSafe USB-C case are A3047, A3048 or A3049.

A valid serial does not prove they are genuine

Apple's Check Coverage tool takes a serial and a CAPTCHA. It is a coverage tool, not an authenticity tool. Xataka documented buyers in Spain whose fake AirPods had a serial that Apple's page confirmed as valid and under warranty. They arrived with a box, materials and pairing that looked right, then dropped the connection often and noise cancellation did not work well. These are Spanish press testimonies nobody verified separately, and we found no Apple or PROFECO page explaining how to spot fake AirPods.

Price is another signal. On 29 September 2026, the deals carousel on Mercado Libre's refurbished page showed AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3 for under MXN 500, while Apple Mexico sold its entry model for MXN 2,999 (its page is now titled AirPods 5). We do not know whether those listings were refurbished and we did not read the sellers, so this is a price gap, not proof of a fake. Mercado Libre says the refurbished items in its section are "original devices (not copies)". There are more general signs in original or fake.

The Find My lock

AirPods can only be paired with one Apple account at a time. If they are still on the previous owner's account, the Find My app says so and you will not be able to pair them to yours. Apple cannot remove that lock for you. The previous owner has to remove them from their account under Encontrar > Dispositivos > Eliminar este dispositivo [Find My > Devices > Remove This Device]. Get that done before paying, or buy where you can still return them if it was not done.

Resetting

A reset does not remove the Find My lock. It gives you a clean start once the old account has let them go.

On AirPods 1, 2 and 3 and AirPods Pro 1 and 2, press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds, until the status light flashes amber and then white. On AirPods 4, AirPods 5 and AirPods Pro 3, double tap the front of the case while the light is on, double tap again when it flashes white, and double tap a third time when it flashes faster. Apple has a separate page for AirPods Max that we did not read.

The battery

We found no Apple page that shows a battery health percentage for AirPods; your iPhone shows the charge of each AirPod. If a listing promises a health percentage, ask where it comes from.

Apple's warranty does not cover batteries that wear out through normal use. On the same page, in the coverage section, Apple says it replaces the battery at no charge if capacity drops below 80%, but that text sits next to accidental damage protection from a coverage plan, so do not count on it if you buy used without a plan. Mercado Libre requires more than 80% battery on refurbished items that have one, but we did not confirm how it applies that rule to earbuds. Apple says Optimised Charging helps reduce battery wear.

Cleaning

For AirPods Pro 2 and 3, Apple says to remove the ear tips before cleaning, clean the meshes with a soft-bristled children's toothbrush, micellar water without PEG-6 and distilled water, and let them dry for at least two hours before using them or putting them in the case. The ear tips come off separately. Apple does not say when to replace tips someone else used. It has separate pages for AirPods and AirPods Max that we did not read.

Sony and Samsung

For the Sony WF-1000XM5, Sony's help guide separates two things. A reset (Reinicio) keeps pairing information and other settings. Initialization (Inicialización) returns the earbuds to factory settings. A reset is not enough to clear what the previous owner left. We did not read Sony's initialization page, so we do not give its steps.

For Galaxy Buds, Samsung's US page says a factory reset is done from the Samsung app: tap About earbuds, then Reset earbuds, then Reset again to confirm. Samsung Mexico's page did not load, so the Spanish menu names may differ.

Warranty and your rights in Mexico

Mercado Libre requires sellers to give a minimum 90-day warranty on all its refurbished items. We did not read any other Mexican shop's policy specific to refurbished AirPods, so check each one on the earbuds page before paying.

The shop must tell you precisely and clearly that the product is used or rebuilt, and record it on the item, the packaging, the delivery note or the invoice (article 39 of the LFPC, Mexico's Federal Consumer Protection Law). If it offers a warranty, it cannot be shorter than 90 days from delivery, under article 77 as amended in the DOF in January 2018, and PROFECO adds that the warranty document must be in writing.

If you bought online or by phone, you have five business days from delivery to cancel the purchase without liability (article 56), with return shipping and insurance on you. That right does not apply to over-the-counter purchases. If the earbuds do not match what you were offered, or if a repair under warranty does not leave them fit for use, you choose a replacement or a refund of what you paid, and you also get a bonificación, a compensation payment of at least 20% of the price (articles 92 and 92 TER). After a failed repair, a replacement must be a new product.

Look the shop up in PROFECO's Buró Comercial, which shows only closed complaints and currently covers January 2019 to August 2026. The details are in your rights when buying refurbished and the photo routine for opening the parcel is in what to check on arrival.
